Much of what transformed Lonesome Valley into Prescott Valley - spurring growth of housing and new businesses between Prescott and the Verde Valley - could not have occurred without the building of highways that linked the Valley to the outside world. It was longtime ranchers like the Fains, driving cattle and sheep through the canyons and windswept valleys between Flagstaff and Phoenix, who were most familiar with the lay of the land and the best routes for passage - and the family was among those enterprising citizens who turned dreams of new highways into hard asphalt realities.
