Once happening upon a knot of outraged cowboys who’d surrounded a “saddle-tramp” - caught hauling off a half-butchered steer from one of Dan’s herds - he made them cut the bedraggled, near-starved poacher loose. “I gave him that steer,” Dan insisted. Not at all the case, but typical of Dan’s generosity and concern for the folk of Central Arizona, which ran as deep as his love of ranching.
